Thirteen SEC players selected on first day of MLB Draft

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 9, 2023) —– A total of 13 Southeastern Conference baseball players were selected on the first day of the Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday, including eight players who were selected in Round 1 and Competitive Balance Round A.

LSU’s Paul Skenes (Pirates) and Dylan Crews (Nationals) were taken Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, becoming the first teammates to be selected 1-2 overall in the MLB Draft. Florida’s Wyatt Langford was selected fourth by the Texas Rangers, while Tennessee’s Chase Dollander went to the Colorado Rockies at No. 9 overall.

Ole Miss‘ Jacob Gonzalez was selected No. 15 by the Chicago White Sox, Vanderbilt’s Enrique Bradfield Jr., was selected 17th by the Baltimore Orioles, and Florida’s Hurston Waldrep was taken 24th by the Atlanta Braves. LSU’s Ty Floyd was picked 38th by the Cincinnati Reds.

The SEC led all conferences with seven first round selections. Five from the SEC were taken in Round 2 (including compensation picks).

Seven SEC universities had at least one player selected on the first day of the draft Sunday. LSU led the way with four, while Florida had three.

The MLB Draft continues Monday with Rounds 3-10 slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT.

Thirty-six more SEC players selected on second day of MLB Draft

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 10, 2023) —– A total of 36 Southeastern Conference baseball players were selected on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday, which included rounds 3-10. Thirteen SEC players were picked on Sunday, and a total of 49 have been selected through 10 rounds.

All 14 SEC schools had at least one player selected on Monday, and 22 Major League clubs have drafted at least one SEC player in the first 10 rounds. Vanderbilt led the way with five players taken Monday, while Alabama, Arkansas and South Carolina had four.

Eight SEC players were selected in Round 1 and Competitive Balance Round A to start the draft on Sunday. Five from the SEC were taken in Round 2, including compensation picks.

The MLB Draft concludes Tuesday with Rounds 11-20 slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
